Inaugural Speech Wordles

After President Obama gave his speech today, I (and many other people) decided to Wordle it. Here was the result:

obama-speech

I also decided to try out a couple of other president’s inaugural addresses. Here’s Franklin Roosevelt’s 1st Inaugural Address:

 fdr-1st-speech

Here’s John F. Kennedy’s speech. It contained the famous line, “Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country.”

William Henry Harrison gave the longest inaugural address (over 2 hours!) in cold, wet weather without a hat or overcoat. He died a month later of pneumonia. The lesson: Don’t talk for too long!

Here’s a link to the full text of President Obama’s speech. What do you think was the most memorable line in the speech?

I like the line ” We will defeat you”.

I like this because they said he repeated this in his speach when he won so obviously this is important to him

  2. alecf1 Says:

Time and again these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw so that we might live a better life. They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions; greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction.

I like this line because it shows that Obama will try not to give and every American is the same.

  3. erinb1 Says:

    I didn’t finish,

  4. Charlie Says:

I like the part in Obama’s speech when he quotes part of George Washington’s rally during the Revolutionary War. I thought it showed how America dosen’t quit and will always be strong. USA!!!!!!

  5. zakd Says:

Homes have been lost, jobs shed, businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly, our schools fail too many, and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.

I like this because he is telling us what’s goin on and by saying this he’s probably saying he’s going to fix it.

My favorite line in the speech was this one. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. I like this because it shows that we have undertaken the diffucult task of choosing a leader in hard times.

  7. samanthas1 Says:

My fellow citizens: I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors.

I like this sentence because President Obama is saying that he grateful and he is aware of the sacrifices made by his ancestors. He sounds really serious and glad to be assuming office.

  8. katiesh Says:

On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.

In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of shortcuts or settling for less.

I like these two lines because I think he captures part of the USA and shows it to us. I think it was a great speech and these two lines are the best in the speech.

    ~Katie S.

    Quote From Obama:
On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.

I guess Katie and I think alike, because we both think that this sentence is memorable. I think I like it because it shows that no body will be left behind during Obama’s presidency. It shows that Obama has no fear at all for this nation, which is good news to all of us. We have made a wonderful decision for a ruler for this country! 🙂

My favorite quote was “People will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy”. I think that he was mainly talking to the terrorists when he said this. I’m glad that he has the courage to say that the terrorists are wrong and that they will be wrong as long as they keep terrorizing!

  11. tandrews Says:

On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.

I like this comment because he is saying that even though America is in a difficult time period, we are all still gathered together as one, fighting for our country. This is a lot like the MLK quote, where he says that love overpowers hate and light over powers darkness, and Obama seems to be following through on this idea.

  12. jayr1 Says:

I thank President Bush for his service to our nation…

I think this shows alot of respect and class. he does not just forget our old president and all that he has done for us. he is saying that he has learned and from and thinks that president bush was a good president.

  13. bethanym1 Says:

Quote that stood out for me from obama:
Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.

I think that this quote stood out because he says the we must pick ourselves up, and begin the work of reamiking America, and that made me think of how our economey is bad right now, and he said that he had a plan to make our econemy better, and i think that is why it stood out.

    Quote From Obama’s Speech:

We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.

I think it is really interesting that Obama quoted Paul from the Bible. I also wonder how Bush felt when Obama said that we need to grow up. Bush might have felt humiliated. I mean seriously, Obama was basically calling him a baby with no knowledge. He said that we need to carry on and leave these things behind. I think his speech was pretty good. I am also surprised he only used “I” about 3 times.

  16. zoedo Says:

    Quote from the speech:

But know this America: They will be met.

I like this quote becuase it is telling America that he will try his hardest and may suceed to solve problems and requests.

    ~Zoe~

  17. MatthewG Says:

Quote – All this we can do. All this we will do.

I thought that this was the most memorable quote because it is the last thing that he said and he saying that what he said in his campain we will do and that we can do it if we work at it.

    ~Matthew~

  18. celiam1 Says:

    A quote from Obama’s speech….

“Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms.”

I think this is a powerful quote because he uses peaceful or raging storms and compares it to the times that the 44 US Presidents have taken office.

  19. anneg1 Says:

I like it when he said “I stand here today”. I mean it’s a pretty common line and alot of people say that exact line, but it is not very often that we hear it fromour new PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!!!! :mr.green:

  21. carolinew1 Says:

On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.

I like this saying because this is what Obama was hoping for and this was what most people voted for his saying hope over fear.

    ~Caroline 🙂

    Quote From Barack Obama’s Speech:

“Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.”

Some would say this quote was important, I think it is important, but I think that America isn’t really broken. We have been in plenty of recessions, wars, poverty etc., but I don’t recall anyone saying we need to remake America.

  23. collind Says:

    The Quote:
“Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.”

When I think about this, i think that he is saying this because of the economy. The economy is crashing, and he wants to make this better. He is saying forget the past and lets take on the future and make it a better economy, a better place for everyone.

  24. greggc Says:

My favorite quote as when he said this to the enemies of the United States “We will defeat you”. This shows that we will not surrender to our enemies and show our courage.

  25. alexu1 Says:

“For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and traveled across oceans in search of a new life.”

To me this quote means that ordinary people wanted to help America. They wanted to protect us in any way they could. They wanted to protect other people from other countries as well. This also means to me that they gave up what they were doing, they “dropped every thing and fought” just to save us, and save other people. I believe that President Barak Obama was talking about war, and how people in war have saved us. I really liked this quote. It makes me feel safe, and protected!

    ~ Alex

  26. jacobw1 Says:

“In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned.”

I like this quote because it means that Obama will always think that greatness just doesn’t come right by your door, but you have to work for it.

  28. ivanap Says:

I like the quote “All this we can do. All this we can do.”

I think this is a very strong quote, syaign that Mr. Obama has a lot of hopes for this country. It also says that he is willing to do all of this for our country. He is showing determination as well as encouragement. He has hopes and he believes he can accomplish them. It is very memorable.

    Ivana 🙂

  29. coliny1 Says:

My favorite line is “Someone is trying to make music somewhere, with a pair of wooden spoons on an oil drum, with cello, boom box, harmonica, voice.”

This line appeals to me becasue it is saying how many people try to do innovative things. It is not easy to play music with wooden spoons and with an oil drum, but people try to do things each and every day.

Also, this line shows collaboration. One person cannot play the cello, the boom box, the harmonica, and sing at the same time. Many people have to work together and play one instrument at a time.

  30. shannons1 Says:

We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus, and nonbelievers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth.

I liked that sentence because it explains how we are all different, but each religon and culture affects us.
