    Thanks for the shout out, Ms. Stewart. I definitely think that kids should pay attention to the news. Kids should read the news, watch the news, listen to the news, and talk to each other about the news, events and public attitudes that affect their lives. Mr. R-M.

  2. hannahc1 Says:

    I think that it is good for kids to know what is happening in the world, and even if it’s innapropriate, they should still be watching out for whatever it is. It is also a source of t.v channel, as Disney Channel and Nick is too, if there is no cable. No matter how scary the news is, the kids should still need to know what is going on.

  3. ninat1 Says:

    I do think that kids need to watch the news! because, if they do then kids will learn how to act in public. And maybe be more thankful for what they have.

  4. rianas Says:

    I deffinitely think kids should be allowed to watch the news. We should know what’s going on around us, because some of that could effect us. We need to be prepared for the “real world” when we grow up, and that’s never going to happen if we don’t know whats happening as kids.

  5. samif1 Says:

    I agree that some news is unappropriate for children but that they have the right to know what is going on and that it is really up to the parents to decide whether or not their children should watch the news with them. Also, I think that young children should not watch the news but that older kids, such as preteens and teenagers should watch the news so that they know what is going on in the world. I personally like to know what is going on in the United States and in the rest of the world, so I do watch the news or read the newspaper. However, if it becomes too gruesome, I leave the room and watch something else or I stop reading the newspaper and read something else. All in all, I believe that the childrens’ parents should decide if their kids should watch the news and if they believe that they should, the children should decide if the news is appropriate for them to watch and/or read.

  6. alecf1 Says:

    I don’t agree wih what that person says about ow kids should not watch the news. News is away for people to know what is going on in the world. How will they find out? Look in a newspaper or online. Both can be just as bad as the new, maybe sometimes worse. Also news is a way for kids to get ready to how violent the world is.
    Alec:)

  7. zoedo Says:

    I think that kids should watch the news so they no what’s happening in the world. Even though some news is inappropriate kids are going to learn about it sooner or later. They can also know what to look out for and how to react to it.

  8. hurschp Says:

    I think that kids should see the news to know what is going on in different places. I also like the idea of making the news that is not supposed to be seen by kids later on when most kids are asleep.

  9. bretth1 Says:

    I think that kids should definitely watch the news. Kids will one day be adults and they will be the ones watching the news, why not start early? Kids should also I think know whats going on so they are not completely oblivious of hat is really going on.

  10. alexu1 Says:

    I think that news is appropriate for CERTAIN children. News is appropriate fpr children who can handle it and who are old enough and responsible. Although it is not appropriate for children who are younger than 6 in my opinion, because they could get scared and not understand what is going on in the world. I don’t think that the reporter should of said that children should not see the news because that is not fair to children who can handle it. The age point i would say would actually start to watch the news and would be interested is about 5th grade. At least that is when I started getting interested. It was because my class had something that was called News Bowl. The teacher said that if you brought in an article that your team would get points. But it depended on the type of article. This really got me to reading. Although i always have loved the weather section.

    Thank you for your valuable time!

  11. joshm1 Says:

    I think kids should watch the news because they deserve to be informed on what’s happening just as much as adults do. The author describes only the bad aspects of the news and did not take time to look at the good parts to the news. The news may have some inappropriate parts in it but that doesn’t mean that all of the news is inappropriate.

    –Josh Milligan πŸ™‚

  12. Charlie Says:

    I don’t agree with that lady from WRAL. I believe if kids want to be educated with current events let them. If it gets disturbing or scary either change the channel or walk away. My parents tell me that it would be news if it happened every day. For example: the Mumbai attacks were very, very bad and scary. But, do think this happens every single day.

  13. katiesh Says:

    I strongly believe that the news is not specially designated for adults. Children have rights, and if they would like to watch the news, they should be allowed to. 100 percent of my youth group watches the news, and 90 percent of them have their parents tell them news also. The reporter says that news stories about Irag, terrorists, and murders are inappropriate for children, and maybe she is right. However, some children, as Alex says, can handle it and the reporter should have accounted for them. I think the reporter is completely wrong.

  14. maxgor Says:

    I belive strongly that kids should watch the news. I feel that kids should also know what is happening in the world just as much as adults know. The reporter said some of the news is violent and inappriate and some kids mabey cant handle it but a lot of other kids can handle the more violent news. I think the reporter is very wrong. Everyone should be intact of what is happeneing in the world. I think if the concern of the news to violent I think the parents of the child should decide. Overall I think kids of all ages should be able to watch the news.
    -Max Gordon

  15. ivanap Says:

    I agree and disagree with the nes lady. I think that kids should watch the new to be informed about what is going on it the world. They can also learn to be careful by watching the news. I als think that the news is not good for kids to watch. Some things may be scary for little kids. I don’t think very small kids should watch the news, but as the kids get older, I think it would make sense for them to start watching the news. I agree with Alex, that certain kids can handle and watch the news. I think it really depends on the kids and their family. They need to choose for themsleves.

    Ivana πŸ™‚

  16. collind Says:

    I think that children should be allowed to watch the news. I think it makes them more educated about what is going on around the world, locally, and around the country. I understand though that parents might not like their kids watching the news, which is why they came out with a handy dandy thing called the remote. If your kid is watching the news with you, depending on age, you may want to just change the channel. If you don’t want to change the channel, just record the show, or ask you kid to go to there homework, maybe go play outside, or simply just to leave the room. Before a certain age kids ALWAYS do what they are told, and most kids under 8 or 9 will. But older than that, even if they don’t listen they will eventually see something like it, and the kid is maturing, so it might not be a bad idea to let him/her kid watch the news. I think this news reporter is definetly is wrong because there is no way you can completely not let children watch news, or some parents think their children are ready.

    ___##Collin Dworsky##___

  17. erinb1 Says:

    I agree that the news should not be exposed to little chilren but there is a difference between children and 12 year olds. We are capable of handling it. on the other hand it is some parents right to not want their kids to see war coverage or recent murders. Just the same we do have a right to know what is goning on

  18. bethanym1 Says:

    I agree and disagree with Amanda Lamb. I think that kids should be aware that what going on, even if it is not always happy, or pleasant. But I also think that some of the stuff on the news is a little too mature for them. I also agree with Alex and Ivana that certain kids can handle more mature things. The news is set up for adults to watch but some kids can handle that stuff. Kids do need to be aware of what is going on, even if some of it might be a little scary or mature. But as kids get older they can handle more things. It also depends on their parents decisions.

    Bethany

  19. kristina Says:

    If kids should watch the news is a very good point. It is true that the news reports stories that are not impropriate for children to watch. The news should continue to report these stories, because it is important for the parents to watch. It is really up to the parents to decide whether of not to let their children watch these stories. Sometimes it is important for children to know the news and what is going on. If there was a kidnapper on the loose, children need to be alert and not get into a car with strangers. A young child won’t know what the news reporter is talking about for the most part, an I think that children should watch news. If it gets to be inappropriate, then just turn off the TV, it will be a good example for children to not watch tv!

  20. isabelleb1 Says:

    I disagree with the news lady; I think that kids should be able to watch the news. I say this because there so many important things that are going on right now that can change kids’ (our) lives, and if we’re protected from the outside world than how will we know what is going on around us? On the other hand I think that kids should just be kids and not have to worry about all of the things that are going on around us; but I think we should AT LEAST be aware of them.
    ~Isabelle

  21. greggc Says:

    I don’t think that young kids should see the news because it can tell them the wrong thing. I will think that the world is a very bad place to live. Every night they will have nightmares about what they saw on the news. Some even think that is how you live by killing other people and when they get older they might even buy a gun and use it. When they grow older it will be better but not when they are very young.

  22. ravenw1 Says:

    I agree with Collin D. and think that kids should be able to watch the news so they can be more educated on what’s going on around them. I also think that parents can’t shield their kids forever and have to let them learn how to be independent. Plus the stuff on the news isn’t that graphic. Just things that most kids won’t even get what exactly happened. I think though that there are some things on the news that some kids aren’t mature enough to handle. Anyway I think the news lady in’t very smart and I feel bad for her kids.

  24. tandrews Says:

    I do think that children should watch the news… but it depends. I think it depends on the type of news being exhibited, the age of the children (which could vary several years), and maybe the perspective of the parent towards the news and what they think would be appropriate for the “children”. I guess that it would be a good thing to turn off the news, but then your child would be totally clueless about everything that’s happening anywhere. Knowing about whats going on in the world will make them aware of what could happen locally or in their older days, either good or bad. Although if it is about things that are extremely violent or mature for the children, well its probably not the best bet to affect their mind with information that they don’t need to know about.

  25. rachelt1 Says:

    I think that it is good for children to watch the news depending on their age and how mature they are. If someone is 6 and they are watching a terrorist attach then I think that it is most definitely wrong. But if someone is like 14 and they are watching a terrorist attack then I think that, that is ok. These days, some homework is to watch the news. I know in my school last year, we did a trivia thing on the news of the week. I agree with Raven and Collin D. Child should definetly be able to know what is happening in the world around us and try to help as much as they can. It is good to have a kid educated by what is happening so that they know what to be aware of or what is happening. That is all…..

  26. celiam1 Says:

    I think that children, sometimes even kids a little young, should be able to watch the news becasuse, it’s the world we live in and the should know the reality. Not all things in life are good. Does that mean we should only show kids the good stuff? I do understand that SOME things are a little mature for some children, but instead of drasticly taking away all news, just don’t watch that one broadcast. If children grow up thinking that the world is a perfect place, they will never think they should get up and change the wrong.

    I think that Children should be allowed to watch the news depending on what is on. The news reporters normally say what is coming in next hour and give a preview. The parent should be able to decide if they want them to watch or not. I agree that something are not appropriate for kids. The parents should make that choice.

    I think that kids have the right to know what is going on in the world. I think that whats going on in the world doesnt only affect adults. Kids should be aware of what is going on. kids can handle what the news is saying and should not be sent away so that thier parents can watch the news is important.
    – katie

  30. delaneyv Says:

    I think that kids should be a loud to watch the news. If the world and parents really want us to grow up and be mature than we should know about whats going around in the world. Im not saying that we should know everything because we are still just kids but we shouldnt be treated like two year olds because we will understand what the news means. We need to be prepared for whats a head of us when we are fully grown and we have to go through some of the news and if we dont know, then when we get older we will not understand and will be shocked because its gonna be new to us. Anyways its not just the adults world we have a right to know whats going on in the world. We can understand the news and again we are not two we are all (everyone over the age of like 9) old enough to understand and not act like the world is coming to an “end”. We may not be 47 or 29 but we aren’t dumb we do get it. Again we are still kids and parents should watch what the little kids watch like i wouldn’t say that 6 year olds should watch grafic news. We know a lot more than what parents think we do.

  31. carolinew1 Says:

    I agree with Alex newspaper is appropriate for some kids. You should be allowed to read it if you don’t freak out when something bad happens like there was a car accident but if you old enough and can handle it then you should defiantly be able to read the newspaper. But I do not think that the reporter should have said that children should not see the news because that is not fair to children who can handle it. I say that you should be able to read the news in like 4th or 5th grade but if you’re younger maybe you should not read the news.

    ps: parents and everyone older (for last sentence)

  33. alexah1 Says:

    I think kids that are 10 and older should watch the news because they are more mature and need to know whats going on in the world. I don’t think kids younger than 10 should watch the news because the news contains a lot of bad news that could scare them. The news is not totally appropriate for younger children but older kids could handle it.

    Alexa πŸ˜›

  34. varunk1 Says:

    I think the news woman is completly wrong what-so-ever because we’ll never know anything about world outside of us without the news. Our parents could tell us, but we won’t understand so much. The news shows it live on tape. So the news tells and shows us, children, how the outside world is. So when we grow up we know exactly what to expect and understand the life ahead of us. The knews also tells us what to do when adiaster is coming. More importantly it will let us know before a huge natural diaster is coming our way.

  35. Kaavya Says:

    I think kids should be allowed to watch most of what is on the news. Ms. Lamb was right when she said that some material may be inappropriate for children, but if something inappropriate comes up, the adults could just ask the children to turn off the TV or leave the room. That way, children can know about some of the things that are going on in the world but they don’t have to be exposed to inappropriate information. Plus, some of the things might be important for the children to know. For example, if there was a terrorist threat or if there was a watch or a warning for a very dangerous storm, children will need to know about his so they can be properly prepared if that event happens. Children might also have to get information off of the news for work they are doing. If they weren’t allowed to watch the news, they wouldn’t be able to get the information they need for their work. Also, the information might be said in an inappropriate way but is really not inappropriate at all. The adults could rephrase what was said on the news to the children in a more appropriate way.

  36. nickv1 Says:

    I think kids should be allowed to watch the news because it is scary to think about all that happens but it really does happen everyday. Also I think that the news with some violent stuff on it helps us grow up, mature and embrace these things in life. But it does dpend on the age becasue we don’t want 3-year olds having to watch someone decapitated.

  37. zakd Says:

    I agree and disagree at the same time. There are some things that kids shouldn’t watch on the news and there are things that kids shouldn’t watch on the news. For example: kids shouldn’t be watching the war because they might start to get interested in doing wars and murderers because they might start to get interested in that too. But they should be watching the weather and anything that has to do with the environment so they know how be safe from the weather conditions and know how to save the environment.

    -Zak Davis

  38. anneg1 Says:

    I think children should not be allowed to watch news. I think this because being a kid i would know that most kids it they try to watch the news some how we/they will change it from the news to some stupid TV show that has nothing to do with the news. Also because sometimes there are inappropriate and freaky things on the news on TV and in the news paper but if you read the news paper you can pull yourself away from those things, not so much with TV. There are also different things in the news paper that you can vary yourself from, for ex. the movies, horoscope, sports etc. Mainly i think that kids should not watch the news on TV everyday maybe sometimes but not everyday. They should read the news paper before there is no newsPAPERS anymore! :mr.green:

  39. jacobw1 Says:

    I think that some children should be able to watch the news,and some should not. Some material on the news e.g. Mumbai troops getting killed, would not be appropriate for young children. What would be appropriate for younger kids is “that shools start healthy lunch program” or something like that. I think that if a child is in the room when the news start, he/she should be abl to watch it. If he/she is not, it is up to the parents decision.

    This is balony. Why should children not get to watch news? Okay, let me quote like a sentence of the book I read tonight. 42. andrewk1 Says:

    I think that some news is appropriate for some viewers. If there is a giant murder/ homicide case that is shown in the news, then I don’t think that little kids should be watching, but older kids and more mature kids might be able to since they are more mature and experienced. On the other hand, some news like the president landed air force one right down the street, should be available to watch for the viewers that are able to understand it. Right now, most people in our grade are allowed to watch the news because we are more mature, but some of the news is still a little inappropriate for all of us, even the grown-ups some times. One day there will be things that you can do to filter in the appropriate things and block the bad things for all audiences to view, but until then, the news will still be somewhat inappropriate.
    Andrew Kenyon

  43. coliny1 Says:

    I guess it depends on what the adults are watching. If it has to do with sports, the weather, etc. I think that kids should be allowed to watch the news. But if it is something that is very serious such as murders, terrorist attacks, etc. then children should not be allowed to watch the news. The parents might think that their kids might have nightmares or might begin to overeact.

    Colin Yeaney

  44. matthewh1 Says:

    I think that kids should watch the news. If they don’t they will never know whats going on.
    That way when they grow up they have an idea of whats going on outside their house. This allow future generations to be prepared for the outside world. I think children’s knowledge should not suppressed but freed and let roam.

    -Matthew Hutzenbuhler πŸ™‚

  45. nyalp Says:

    I think that kids under the age of 9 should watch the news because sometimes there are some things that are to mature for a 9 year old to watch. Some news like about what’s going in in Iraq and things about the terrorists in Mumbai are fine for kids to know about, and as a matter a fact that well help benefit the childs understanding of what’s happenening in and out of the country.

    ~~~~~~~Nyal Patel~~~~~~~
  46. kaim1 Says:
    my opinion is split in two.
    First of all, I think children should not watch the news. The global news, the celebrity news or even the local news, because anywhere you look there is something innaprporiate for children in both ways. When children see those things, they’ll pass it on to others, and then the whole country will be corrupt! Oh wait! THAT ALREADY HAPPENED!
    The other thing I think about children watching the news is that they’ll know how others are living. They won’t be selfish (I don’t think it’s working, though -_-‘) The news can teach lessons to eachother. Whether it’s social skills or just regular fact, it can teach people. Sometimes it’s not the best, but I guess parents just have to be careful.
  47. kaim1 Says:
    p.s. Ms. Stewart, are you going to add snow to the blog? I did!
  48. sydneyj Says:
    I think that kids should be able to watch the news, to know more of what is happening in the world. It will give kids a better understanding, and it will probably make them more mature and caring. But sometimes some news casts aren’t appropriate for little children. Like bombings and terrorists. When I was little, I remember watching the news about the twin towers falling down because of terrorists. I didn’t get scared, and my parents explained to me what happened. Kids should definitely get to watch the news.
    ***$ydn3y J0hn$0n*** πŸ™‚
  49. joannaw1 Says:
    I think kids should know what is going on in the world and should see the news. Unless it is something that isn’t “kid friendly”. But for the most part they should watch the news. They could miss out on something really important. Keeping up with the news could cause some great reading, listening and other skills. A little kid who is like 4 may be scared of something like a murder on the news so it is best for somebody that young not to watch news like that but news that is apporpriate for them and won’t scare them or send a bad message is fine.
  50. ahmadat Says:
    i think that children should be able to watch the news so they know about the economy ad not to litter and stuff like that. if their is inappropriate things that i shouldn’t go into detail you would either immediately shield your child’s eyes and ears and not or escort them out of the room. if it were a weather situation like its going to snow tomorrow or if its politics like the presidential election and who one and just to let everyone know Obama won because hes awesome last thing im going to say but …. wait mom im posting to the blog any way i think children should be aloud to watch the news unless it is something inappropriate.
  51. minjiey Says:
    I think that kids should have the right to watch the news. They have the right to watch the news, unless something inappropriate or scary is happening. Kids should have the same right to watch the news as their parents. Something like a story about a suicide or a terrorist would not be appropriate though. But overall, i think kids should have the right to watch the news. Kids need to learn to become mature and learn about their surroundings because sooner or later, they are going to have to know about what happens all the time, in their community, in their country and in the world.
    M!N7!E πŸ˜€
  52. kendallb1 Says:
    It depends on the age of the person watching it. At our age 11-12 we should be able to watch the news where as 4 year olds shouldn’t be looking at things such as murder cases and such. Can anybody other than Colin Yeaney sign their name correctly?
    Kendall Bell
  53. ryanm1 Says:
    It all depends on nhow young the kid is. If he or she is 7 then the answer is no because they don’t need to see murder scenes. If the kid is 11 or 12 then i think that they could if they needede to, if they have no purpose then no but if they have a purpose then they could.
    Ryan McDonald
  54. AlmaN Says:
    I think that it depends what kind of news it it, because sometimes the news and violent and to much for younger children to handle, but I still think that it is important for them to know about the news going on locally and globally. They still need to know whats going on and all, have a glance of reality but it’s not as important to children as it is to adults.
    aLmA πŸ™‚
  55. silvias1 Says:
    I disagree with the woman trying to prove her point. I feel that when watching the news, some parents may allow their children to watch it with them. Others may disagree with this point. I have a feeling that there are some parents that are ok with their children knowing about terrorists or bombing attacks. The news people should be aware of this, but also not try and make everything they are saying seem happy. Maybe if the news people cut back on the gruesome stories a little then the kids may be allowed to watch it, but the news still get their stories.
    Silvia Soto πŸ™‚
  56. abbyha Says:
    I think that kids should watch the news sometimes because they should know what is going on in the world. But sometimes the news has content that might worry young children such as murders or robberies happening where they live. Kids should know that the world isn’t perfect and bad things happen every day, but as a result they shouldn’t be worried or upset after watching the news.
    Abby Hall
  57. amandal1 Says:
    I think kids should be allowed to watch the news and should be encouraged to watch the news. However i think there are certain things on the news that can be inappropriate for certain age groups. One thing that kids should watch in the news is the politics because that is something that is important and appropriate. Politics is also something that may be a big part of kids lives later on when they are older.
  58. annaj1 Says:
    I thought that what Amanda Lamb said was not true. I thought that what she said about news not being for kids was mean and selfish. What is they need to cheek the news because they are home alone and need to see if there is severe weather. Kids will see the news sooner or later, so why keep from the what is really going on.
  59. jonathanav Says:
    I agree and disagree with the news lady and here is why. Kids should not watch the news because some subjects are inappropriate and very negative. Also because in some peoples opinion the news is boring. Some reasons why they should watch the news is because the need to learn about what goes on around the world. Also because they will see how good their life is compared to other people.
